CCCX XC Series Titles Up For Grabs This Sunday in Monterey

Once again, Dusty Downs is back to preview this weekend's racing down on the coast.

xc72008me8.jpgThis Sunday in Monterey will be the final event of the CCCX XC Series presented by X Fusion. For 2008 the series was 9 races in total, and going into the final many of the divisions will not be decided until the final race is contested, scored, and point totals are tallied. The course will be about 5.5 miles in length with Beg. riders doing 3 laps, Sport riders 4 laps, and Experts 5 laps. The trails and terrain of Ft Ord are not overly technical, however the riding is very fun and challenging.

Here is a look at the divisions where the final race will determine the outcome:
BEGINNER 19-34 has Luis Saldana of Salinas and David Macchi of San Jose separated by only 3 points going into the last race. The rider with the highest finish at the final is the determining factor if it comes down to a tie on total points. Each of these riders has pedaled to a win during the series and have posted results always in the top three. So this division will surely be one of the tightest battles on the trail this coming Sunday.

In the CLYDESDALE division Daymon Prewitt of Marina has a outside shot at the series win. However, Scott Harper of Atascadero seems to have found his form toward the end of the year winning the past 3 races of the series. Prewitt would need to win the final with Harper fading to 3rd place or worse. Harper just seems to be on a mission to claim the series win showing he is one of the fastest big men in Northern California on a mountain bike.

The PRO-SEMI PRO division has come down to close friends fighting it out for the series win. Jason Rahlwes (Fox Racing Shox) and MTB living legend Larry Hibbard (Family Cycling Center) are separated by just a few points and the final race could determine series winner. Both Rahlwes and Hibbard constantly show up and compete at the CCCX series whether it is Cyclo-Cross or MTB racing. Hibbard now finds himself needing to make up a few points on the Fox Racing Shox sponsored Rahlwes. Hibbard is a true inspiration to all Nor-Cal riders as he is super strong and super fast year after year on all types of terrain and bikes.

EXPERT 19-34 division has one of the closest series battles of 2008. Greg Heinz of Salinas has had a stellar Expert season of racing. Heinz used the CCCX series to gain fitness early in the season. Heinz then rode to outstanding wins at the Sea Otter Classic and multiple USA Cycling National events. Heinz also has posted 4 solid wins during the CCCX series. Scott Chapin is the coach of the Harbor High Pirates MTB Team of the Nor-Cal High School MTB League. Chapin also has had a strong 2008 racing season besides taking part in coaching responsibilities for the Harbor High riders. Chapin has won 3 CCCX races and finished 2nd to Heinz on two other occasions. This puts him only 3 points behind the strong riding Heinz going into the final. Heinz just suffered a brutal crash while training this past weekend and will have to dig deep this Sunday to come up with a good race while slightly injured. The final race will be a true shoot out between the two 19-34 Expert riders.

The PRO/EXPERT SINGLE SPEED division has the closest battle going on for the CCCX series crown of all the divisions being contested. Cesar Chavez (Buy-cell.com/Poshard Con.) and Mark Howland (Black Market Racing) have each posted 4 wins during the 9 race series. Each rider has also claimed 2 second place finishes to put them dead even on ranking points going into the final. So which ever Single Speed rider crosses the finish line first will win the CCCX title and the CCCX series champion custom jersey and plaque. But even more important then the goods, is the bragging rights of a hard fought Nor-Cal win in the highly competitive Single Speed division. Chavez went virtually undefeated racing the Single Speed division in Nor-Cal Cyclo-Cross races during the 2007 cross season. While Howland was very close to claiming the Single Speed CCCX series win in 2007 in his first true attempt racing this division. Now it comes down to one race for all the marbles between these two highly talented all around cyclists.
Racing action starts at 9:00 a.m. with Beginners, then Sport at 11:00 a.m., and Pro/Experts at 1:00 p.m. Directions are available here.

Wildfire Cause Western States Cancellation

This week's wildfires across Northern California has caused it's first race cancellation (but not a MTB race):
"The Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile [trail running] race scheduled to begin Saturday, was scrapped late Wednesday for the first time in its 35-year history because of the 'health risks that have been associated with these wildfires,' race officials said in a statement."
Via SF Gate.

Currently there are no plans to cancel this weekend's CCCX or Skyline races.

You can track the fires here.

2008 TBF Friday Night #2 Results

Overall and divisional results have been posted for last weekend's TBF Friday Night XC #2.

2008 Prairie City Race Series Fall FLASH

Just as the Spring PCRS is wrapping up (tonight's race is the finale), the Fall Flash series has been announced.

The Fall Flash series is "... un-sponsored and supported entirely by your participation! It is a "compact" version of our regular season...the FLASH courses are a little shorter, flatter and faster than our Spring/Summer season courses because of the limited sunlight hours... other than that, same great fun! These races are great for the first time racer or the Expert looking more training. The Fall FLASH Series has been made 'famous' because of the following 'features': NO trophies! NO raffle prizes! NO schwag! NO t-shirts! NO whining...doh! Just braggin' rights and mostly: GREAT FUN!"

The Fall series also has a cyclocross class for those of you looking for some early CX season training.

Dates for this year's Fall Flash series are:
  • August 20 & 27
  • September 3, 10 & 17
Races cost $25 for your first race (+$10 for race day registration) and then $12/race afterwards. The races are held at the same Prairie City Off Road Vehicle Park near Sacramento, CA (actually closer to Folsom on I-50).

For more information consult Prairie City Race Series Fall FLASH Series webpage.

2008 CCCX Spring DH Finale Preview

Dusty Downs is back this week to provide us with a preview of this Sunday's CCCX Spring DH Finale

dh_course_series_final2.jpgThe CCCX will contest it's final race of the 2008 Spring/Summer Downhill Series this Sunday June 22 at its usual location of Toro Park near Monterey. The series final will also count as race #3 of Team Bigfoot's NorCal DH Series. Plus, the CCCX DH Series will host it's fund raiser-raffle for the Mark Reynolds memorial fund. This raffle-fundraiser has many prizes to be handed out to those who show up to race and support the cause. Items from many industry names such as Shimano, Fox Racing, X Fusion, as well as items from CCCX Sponsors such as Calabazas Cyclery, and Trail Head Cyclery will be raffled off to build support for the Mark Reynolds memorial fund.

The course looks to be similar to past CCCX Series final courses. The lower part of the course is used only for the series final and features some extremely fast and railing sections of single track, off camber trails, and fire roads. The upper portion of the course will be similar to other CCCX DH races and this portion has some wide open fire roads leading to bermed turns and switch-backs combined with a few drops to test all aspects of riding. The traction is fast, dry, and slick in most sections. So tire choice and air pressure will come into play to produce a riders fastest time.

A few of the division titles in the series will come down to the final run after competitions on 8 different courses during the Spring/Summer campaign. Of note, the Expert 19-34 division has been dominated by Jordan Lopez (WTB/GAMUT/Crank Bros/SDG/661/ODI), however a late season charge by Ryan Randall (SCCCC) has put Randall with a last race chance at the division crown if he pulls off a win and Lopez falters. Don Palermini (Top Dog/Bell Helmets) needs to have a solid run in the Men's Sport 35-44 division to hold off super fast Jason Kent (TieniDuro Jr. Cycling). In the Men's Beg. 19-34 division local boy Bret Wheeler of Salinas has been fighting back and forth with San Mateo's Brett Harmon and their division will come down to the final race. Roxanne Canent (Barf Racing) appears to be the most improved rider by winning the Beg Women's division and making a run to also win the Sport Women's division all in the same season. The best division races are in the Junior categories and the final race in these divisions will determine series champions. Junior Boy's 16-18 has Alex Deich of Santa Cruz tied equally on points with Lucas Nakamura of Concord going into the series final race. While Max Rausch (Carmel Bicycle/Blue Whale Racing) has a slight lead over fast riding Matt Fyten of San Jose in the Junior Boys 14-16 group. These two young downhill speedsters have been racing back and forth trading division wins over the first seven races and the series final will decide the overall outcome between the two. Cody Womack of Granite Bay needs to ride clean to hold off Kevin Saylor of Felton in the Junior 13 & Under division. Lastly and amazingly, Keith DeFiebre (Calabazas/CVC/Oakley/X Fusion) looks set to win four divisions of the series, Expert 35+ Men, HardTail, Single Speed, and Chainless for the 2nd season in a row.

Lake Sonoma Series #3 Preview

Saturday is June installment of the Lake Sonoma XC series:
"You're likely to experience the full effect of the summer heat that billows out of the Lake Sonoma basin. Come see how tough you really are. We have a couple plans to beat the heat: We're stock-piling water pistols and super soakers. All you have to do is make it back to the finish for a wet-head of your choosing."

2008 PCRS #11 Results

Results for PCRS #11 have been posted along with pictures.

As this is the penultimate race, it's time to take a look at the current series standings: Even with Brian Rouse's (220 pts) low finish in the week's Expert Plus division race (the only one he hasn't won so far), the battle is for second place between two or three riders. The battle is far closer for the Expert Women: Bonnie Darrah leads with 201 points, but Shayna Powless (199 pts), Rhonda Figone (188) and Calvin Jennifer (186 pts) are within easy striking distance.

2008 Northstar DH #1 Results

The results are posted from Northstar's first Downhill race of the season. It looks like there were about 130 racers for the course that consisted of upper to middle Karpiel then split for Expert / Pros to lower Dogbone (slabs), to bottom of Karpiel (vietnam), to stadium jump finish. Sport / Beginner instead took lower Phodogg, to stadium jump finish.

I think congrats are in order to top expert Keith Morelah (not sure about the name due to Northstar's standings), top Pro Jessi Trask and top Female Tasa Herndon.

I haven't seen any video or race pictures but the Lake Tahoe Mountain Biking community has some commentary.

RACE REPORT: TBF Friday Night #1

Last Friday was the first race in TBF Friday Night summer series near Sacramento. Similar in to their early season MTB Challenge series, this series will be only three races and held on consecutive weeks. Since I live close enough to almost see the course, I decided to tear myself away from happy hour to race.

I was intrigued by how the new-ness of the race and the high temperatures would effect the turnout, but we had about 120 racers plus an ample crowd of spectators. TBF brought the usual first-rate organization (timing, registration, swag bags, etc.)
tbf_friday_nite_1.jpg

Since the race was being held on Friday night, a prime time for regular (i.e. drunken boaters) park users, TBF slightly changed the usual course. Instead of starting and finishing near the beach/parking lot, they moved slightly east past the sand pit (see course picture below). While they did change the start/finish, the course itself was largely unchanged -- 5.6 mile laps with 720' climbing per lap. However, we did run it backwards compared to the early season -- no big climb to start.

IMG_0254.JPGSince this course is so close to my house, I train on it often. It's slightly technical when dry (due to the loose over hardpack) but mostly just flowing up and downs. It rewards riders who can flow and keep momentum, and everyone tells me that it's great for 29ers. Talented racers can finish a lap in 25 minutes or so.

I was racing Sport (2 laps -- experts ran 3, beginners 1) and we had a respectable turnout. Out of the shoot, I settled in behind the lead group (4 racers broke away before we even hit the first climb) at a comfortable pace. Through the first set of turns and short climbs, I steadily moved to the front of the second pack. However, to get there I was taking some chances -- I was running my tires at too high pressure and had a little too much travel dialed into my fork. And this came back to bite me hard at about the 1.5 mile mark, when I took a pretty epic digger on loose, sweeping left. Even worse, I was leading about 7 riders and as I went down, most of them came over the top of me. It must have looked like something out of a road race crash. By the time, I got my seat post straightened and back -- I was simply out of it. I probably dropped 10 places. In addition to the being at the back of the pack, I had substantial road rash on my lower left leg, which hurt like h*ll for the rest of the race.

Needless to say, I didn't finish on the podium. Top sport finishers pull 00:27:00 laps, I was past the 00:30:00 point.

The next race in the series is this Friday night, with the finals on June 27th.

NorCal MTB Racing This Weekend: Father's Day

The week's NorCal MTB Racing This Weekend was written by guest blogger Dusty Downs. Dusty updates us today on races and racers throughout the region:

markweirdh.jpgNorCal MTB racing this weekend has the Fathers Day version of the CCCX Cross Country race in Monterey on Sunday June 15. Also on Fathers Day is Northstar's first DH race of the year at the awesome Northstar MTB Park. Both of these events are a blast and will surly fill your urge to race your mountain bikes and enjoy the trails. The weather looks to be good and this is one of the best ways to spend Fathers Day, riding your bike while spending time with family and friends.

A little farther North is Ashland's famed 12 Mile Super D race. Many NorCal riders venture to this 12 mile fun fest of a DH race because of Ashland's great trail network, and also to train and get ready for the bid daddy of NorCal races the Downieville Classic. The 12 Mile Super D is a great pre-event warm up for Downieville's demanding 17 mile Super D epic.

When in Ashland be sure and track down "Wild Bill" Rousell and utilize his great MTB Shuttle Service. This new business is properly named Ashland Mountain Adventures, and "Wild Bill" is a excellent host for this area, and he also boasts a large fleet of Specialized Bikes for rent. 'Wild Bill" knows all the trails and all the fun routes and will show any category of rider from Beginner to Expert where the fun trails are in Ashland.

WTB's Mark Weir will be there throwing it down at the 12 Mile Super D. Weir has been on quite a roll recently trying to prepare for his title defense of the legendary Downieville downhill. Weir has posted victories at the Summit Shorty Short Track race and the Ely Nevada Fears Tears and Beers event during the past 2 weeks. Rumor has it Weir has taken his training to another level using his SRM. Using all the features of the SRM, Weir is on a mission to train harder and target his physical peak for Downieville. This year is a special year for Downieville and Mark Weir, as Flyin Brian Lopes will contest the downhill, as well as hundreds of other MTB racers. Lopes is one of the World' best all around cyclists and will surely give his all to upset Weir. Also Jurgen Benke will again try and challenge the 'Downieville King' Mark Weir. Jurgen was not ready for Weir's dominance and popularity at last years race, so maybe this year he will be more prepared for the buzz saw of Weir's cranks spinning like mad on the Downieville trails. The big show that of Downieville's event is only one month away, July 11-13, and NorCal's racers will be using all the regional events leading up to this date to fine tune their legs.

Happy Fathers Day to all !!!

Thanks Dusty.

2008 CCCX DH #7 Results

cccx_dh_7.jpgI haven't seen the official results posted yet, but I've got news from yesterday's CCCX DH #7, and it looks like Keith DeFiebre (Calabazas/Oakley/CVC/Ritchey) posted the top 2 fastest times of the day on the 3 mile Super D course that dropped 1500 vertical feet. Junior Expert Keith Morelan(Ride SFO/Cerk Racing) was 3rd fastest on the day.

Full photos of the race are available at Rick R's SmugMug site.

I'll update this post with a link to the race results when they're up.

Also, the Series Final raffle on June 22 in honor of Mark Reynolds has grown substantionally over the past months and now features 4 Bikes, many 2008 goods from Shimano, and a host of other items from current CCCX sponsors. All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to the Mark Reynolds memorial fund. Looks like Toro Park will be the place to be on June 22 to close out the 2008 CCCX DH Series.

UPDATE: race results and series standings are posted.

Chainlove.com

So I hesitate to post this, not because I don't make a penny off it, but because it might mean people snaking bargains that I want. But I will.
Picture 4.png

The folks behind Steep & Cheap (the woot! of outdoorsy goods) has launched Chainlove.com, a place where they sell "primo piece(s) of cycling gear on our site at a scandalous price(s)." The basic premise here is they feature one deal until its gone (which is often minutes not hours).

I will warn you: this can be hazardous to your wallet.

Thanks to the folks at Blue Collar Mountain Biking for the heads up.

Shannon Ridge Update

Little tidbit of information on the upcoming Shannon Ridge Showdown. Turns out it is being organized by the capable people behind two of NorCal's best endurance races:
"So now we've got another race on our calendar. But it ain't Bike Monkey, and it ain't Global Biorhythm Events--it's both. So if you think a barrel of monkeys is fun, hang on. Because in October you're going to get a 'Global Monkey', and that's a ripe banana."
For those of you not in the know, Bike Monkey is behind the Boggs 8 Hour race and Global Biorhythm puts on the Coolest 24.

ROAD TRIP: Fears, Tears and Beers

2008Flyer.jpgBefore you tell me that Ely is 7 hours away from NorCal and that gas is a hundred dollars a gallon, I am still going to post this because I think this is a cool race.

This weekend is the annual Fears, Tears and Beers enduro race in Ely, Nevada. What exactly is an enduro race, you ask ?
"There will be 3-5 timed sections or "special tests", mostly twisty downhills. The sum of the times on these special tests will determine the winner. So take your time on the uphills and enjoy the scenery and then let it all hang out in the special tests. Beer provided by White Pine Brewing Company based out of Ely!"
Lazy climbs AND BEER ? We could learn something from the Nevadans on this. We need to move this idea into NorCal pronto.
