2009 CCCX XC #4 Results

2009cccx4.pngOnce again our friendly correspondent Dusty Downs has the scoop on last weekend's CCCX XC #4:
Greg Heinz (Joselyns/Brunham Coaching) and Mary Ellen-Ash (Sugar CRM) claimed top honors this past weekend at the CCCX XC #4 race held at Toro Park near Monterey. The Toro Park course features a steady climb of 2.5 miles with nearly 1000 feet elevation gained, followed by a ripping descent back down to the start-finish area. Recent trail work by course builder Keith DeFiebre (GT Dirt Coalition) made the route extremely fun to ride with the additions of berms, easy flowing rollers where riders can catch some air, and overall general trail maintenance. Over 180 riders tackled the challenging course. There was also a brand new section of single track trail used near the start finish making Toro Park one of the more scenic courses in Nor-Cal. In the end Heinz and Ellen Ash were strongest on the day. Heinz had to hold off hard charging former World Champion Rob Anderson(Team Specialized Racing), and Chad DeHerra(Willow Glen Bikes) who were 2nd and 3rd in the Pro/Semi Pro Division. While Mary Ellen-Ash outkicked Sharon Hill(Murray/Renaissance) for the win by a mere six seconds at the line. Carolina Villafane(Buy-cell.com) was third in the Women's Pro/Expert Division.

Here is a list of all the race winners on the day, the next CCCX race is this coming Saturday April 4 in Monterey:

First Reports from Boggs IV

Although the results won't be posted for a day or two, the first race reports are starting to trickle in from this weekend's Boggs IV. First from the race organizers at Bike Monkey:
I want to thank all of the racers who came to Boggs again to celebrate what is essentially Bike Monkey’s 4 year anniversary. We had several hundred participants this year, and once again reached our cap. Next year registration will open at midnight on January 1st and close at the same cap. If you didn’t get on our mailing list then you need to e-mail cheryl@bikemonkey.net and make sure you do or you might miss out on being able to sign up for next year’s race. That would be a shame!
Other race reports and photos:I'll post a link to the results when I see them.

U.S. Cup featured on Speed Television’s Super Bikes

Make sure to set your Tivo for Tuesday March 31st at 9pm Eastern Standard Time to Speed Televisions show “Super Bikes” where U.S. Cup spokesman Jason Britton features his segment on the opening round of the U.S. Cup Mountain bike series For those of you who didn’t attend the opening round of the Kenda Cup West opener at Bonelli Park, you won’t want to miss this action packed segment.

    Boggs IV Preview

event_boggs.jpgThis weekend is the annual Boggs (the fourth to be exact) and the organizers have some wise words to participants:
It snowed last night in Boggs Demonstration State Forest–a couple inches. It’s chilly outside, and it’s snowing even today, periodically. But that’s all about to change. By Saturday the temperature in Cobb, CA are supposed to reach 70 degrees. In the meantime I want to share some words to the wise.

    2009 CCCX DH#2 Results

cccx_dh_2_weir.jpgThis weekend brought the second CCCX Downhill race and our own Dusty Downs was there:
Over 200 Downhill racers ventured to Toro Park for race #2 of the Central Coast Downhill Series on Sunday. A steady rain on Saturday night turned a dry course, into a perfectly watered down track that became grippy with great traction for most of the day. However, high winds in some of the fire road sections hit riders directly head-on making for aerodynamics and power output a premium for a fast time.

Mark Weir (WTB/Fox) produced the fastest time of the day. Weir delivered a blistering run, manhandling the course to the tune of a 3.33'98''. 2nd overall fastest was Colorado Springs resident and X-Fusion/Intense sponsored Ryan Condrashoff at 3.35'21''. Condrashoff's team mate John Hauer (Team X-Fusion/Intense) was 3rd fastest with a time of 3.36'53''.

Keith DeFiebre (GT Dirt Coalition/Calabazas Cyclery) was the Single Speed Division winner. Scott Seery (Team Wrong Way) topped the Hardtail Division. While Aaron Crozier of San Jose was the Clydesdale Division winner.

Fastest overall Woman on the day was Rosie Bernhard ( Another Bike Shop) with a time of 4.32'56''. Bernhard was followed by fast riding Heather McFadden (Chico) at 4.36'01''. While 3rd quickest female on the day was hard charging Kelly Moore (50/50 DH Race Team) riding to a time of 4.38'80''.

The top Junior rider was Alex Amaral (Fox Racing Shox/Point One Racing) who bombed down the hill with a time of 3.49'31''.

    2009 Grasshopper Adventure Series

GAS09_Pstr.jpgThis is another post that has sat in my INBOX for far too long ... The famed Grasshopper Adventure Series has stepped up this year and gone from not-so-casual ride to a full race with USA Cycling backing. In it's 11th year, based out of Occidental in Western Sonoma County this race series covers both road and mountain courses. The first race was February 28th (MTB/cross) and the top five results are:
    1. Geoff Kabush
    2. Max Plaxton, ST
    3. Barry Wicks
    4. Kris Sneddon
    5. Aren Timmel
Races are $10 + USA Cycling license (1 day licenses available). The next race is April 11th, a long loop at Lake Sonoma and is always epic.

NorCal MTB Racing This Weekend: March 21 - 22, 2009

Two races in NorCal this weekend:
    • Saturday is the first Lake Sonoma Series race of the year. This year's XC race series has a few changes (like a cap of 150 riders per race), but promises the same level of competition. Full details at BikeMonkey.

    • Sunday is the second CCCX DH. Here's the course preview: "It has been very dry recently at Toro Park, and with rain in the forecast Saturday night the dirt could be perfect for racing on Sunday. The course starts out on a fast gradual fire road which spits riders into a tight-twisting single track. There has been trail work done on the berms in the turns, and this will make for some railing speeds in trail transition areas. Then there is a drop off section which leads to a power check riser where pedaling force is tested. Next are some drop in portions of the trail where breaking and line choice come into play. This is followed by a tight single track leading to a high speed fire road section. Which is then followed by more single track and more fire road sections leading to a high speed finish. This course tests a riders turning, breaking and power output over 4 minutes of fun riding Toro Park trails."
If you can't make either of these, you might want to check out the Big Sandy Pre-ride on Saturday. It'll be on the same trails starting at 8:45 AM.

Help Charity, Help Your Racing at Lake Sonoma Series

Sorry, this has been sitting in my INBOX for a few days now ... The March 21st Lake Sonoma Series is teaming with Bicycles for Humanity and will be giving away free entry to anyone who comes to race and brings a mountain bike with 26" wheels as their entry contribution -- and they even still get the burger and beer at the end!
Bicycles for Humanity will send its’ first shipment of bikes from Sonoma County to Namibia, Africa on March Saturday March 7th. USED MOUNTAIN BIKES ARE NEEDED! This grass-roots project will send 350 used mountain bikes to Gobabis, Namibia, Africa. In Gobabis, healthcare workers are currently unable treat all of their homecare patients because their only transportation is on foot. A bike changes that. Purchasing a new or used bike is out of reach for most Namibians, about 5 months wages. With your help, this community will be transformed and lives will change. The shipping container will be used as a bike workshop in this rural community which will provide a transportation infrastructure for healthcare workers and provide jobs for the local community. YOUR USED BIKE CAN CHANGE A LIFE! This is a unique opportunity to make a huge impact in the world. There are millions of unused bikes in the U.S. and many thousands here in Sonoma County. If you have a used mountain bike to donate, be sure to drop it off at one of the locations below or email santa_rosa@bicycles-for-humanity.org for more information. Give you OLD bike a NEW life!
Props to the BikeMonkey folks for this ...

    • Saturday, September 19
Northstars Super D races will begin at 3:30 at the Top of either the Tahoe Zephyr or Vista Express Chair lifts and finish in the village. Super D is a hybrid event combining aspects of the disciplines of Cross Country and Downhill racing. These courses are typically not as technical in nature as Downhill races; testing both a rider’s endurance and bike handing skills. Most competitors will choose a 4-6 inch travel trail bike to compete on. This is a great event a lot of people can enjoy. There isn't a whole lot of climbing so you don't have to be in great shape, although it doesn't hurt, and you don't need a full downhill bike to make it down.

    Cross-Country Bike Races (XC)

Try your luck in this fun, recreational mountain bike race for all ages and abilities. Courses are suitable for beginners through experts. Awards are given out at the conclusion of the series based on cumulative points. A generous raffle is held each week. Helmets are required.

    MTB Racing This Weekend: March 14 & 15, 2009

Another big weekend of racing in NorCal:
    • Saturday is the second Sand Hill Spring Gravity race in the East Bay. This weekend it is Dual Slalom instead of Mountaincross.
    • Sunday is the annual Cool MTB Race near Auburn, CA. The Cool race is held on the Olmstead Loop, renowned for muddy (if not snowy) conditions.
    • Sunday is also the third CCCX XC race near Seaside, CA. Head honcho of the CCCX race, Keith DeFiebre, describe this weekend's race as "The CCCX XC race will be a 5 mile lap featuring a few new sections of trail in Ft Ord never used before for a MTB race. The race route features multiple climbs and lots of fun riding single track that is in perfect condition after last weeks rain. Spring time really is the best time to race Mountain Bikes in this area of Ft Ord as the flowers are starting to bloom, the grass is green, and the trails are smooth and fast, making for some beautiful scenery and fun racing."
Hope everyone takes advantage of the extra daylight to get out and race (or at least ride) this weekend.

NorCal MTB Racing This Weekend: March 7 - 8, 2009

It's the first full weekend of multiple races throughout the region this weekend:
    • 03/07/09 (Saturday): Sand Hill Spring Gravity (4X): As we talked about yesterday, this race is a goer. This is the first race in the series and it will be a Mountaincross/4X race. It'll set you back $35 (plus $5 if you haven't renewed your USA Cycling license) and racing starts at 11 AM in Brentwood (East Bay).
    • 03/07/09 (Saturday): Chanoko Mountain Bike Duathlon #3 (MTB Duathlon): The Chaoko MTB Duathlon is the lesser known sibling of TBF's MTB Challenge races. Similar course, but your MTB racing will be bookended with running (one run before, one after). Probably fun ... if you like being off your bike. It starts at 9AM at Folsom Lake near Sacramento.
    • 03/08/09 (Sunday): MTB Challenge #3 (XC): This is the last race in the 2009 MTB Challenge series, which we have covered at length. I'll try and have a trail preview (after this week's monsoons) later today or tomorrow.
    • 03/08/09 (Sunday): Buck Ridge Race 2009 (XC): Sick Promotions has brought back the Buck RIdge Race for 2009. It'll start at 11 AM outside Fresno.
It looks like the weather is going to be great this weekend, so make sure and get out to support your local race scene.

Stay tuned about this weekend's Sand Hill Spring Gravity opener:
(If it's raining, call the hotline) The March 7 race is 50-50% on running or not. The decision will be made by this afternoon at 4 pm (Thursday). There is a 30% chance of showers by noon, then after that we need to see how quickly it has all dried out.
    Via Sand Hill Racing.

    UPDATE: All systems go:
YES on the Mountain Bike race this Saturday (3/7/09). All race details are at www.sandhillracing.com. Click onto the Bicycle Races page...Track is in great shape. A few soft spots in the parking lot....

Date Change for Lake Sonoma #2

logosmall.jpgJust a heads up that there is a slight change in the Lake Sonoma Series schedule:
As promoters we often burry our heads, and sometimes so much we forget to see what’s going on around us. Jim Northey of Global Biorhythm Events is going to produce Boggs first ever 24 hour event on the 20th of June, and I intend on participating. So with that said I gotta let you all know I goofed up and had our June Lake Sonoma Series race scheduled on the same day… The change is: Lake Sonoma Series is June 13th, 1 week before Boggs 24 hour. Make a note of it!

I've already updated the schedule in the right hand column.

NorCal MTB HS Welcomes Shimano as Sponsor

From the ever efficient NorCal MTB High School League PR machine:
With the racing season only days away, Shimano has come forward to back the programs of the Northern California High School MTB Racing League and the Southern California Interscholastic Cycling League, in a new sponsorship deal that will see Shimano have a presence at the League events and in League literature.

The Shimano sponsorship comprises both cash and product contributions to support the League’s continued innovation in the realm of race production. The League’s sophisticated race results and team scoring program (Developed by volunteer Francis Chapman), which includes features such as on the fly Wi-Fi broadcast and automatic team scoring, will be named “Results cranked out by Shimano” to honor their support. In addition, product support will allow the League’s volunteer mechanic, Lincoln Linsmith, to provide neutral support at the (NorCal) races.

    Iron Horse Bikes "goes Bust"

sunday_wc_0.jpgThe recession has claimed the first victim in the MTB industry:
The forums have been buzzing all day with rumours about the demise of mountain bike brand Iron Horse. We spoke to UK brand manager Martin Astley to get the truth.

He told us that Iron Horse's parent company has gone bust, but assured us that the brand looks set to be sold to a new owner.

Martin insisted that, contrary to internet gossip, warranties would be honoured and people with Iron Horse bikes would still be able to get replacement parts.

He told us: "The truth is that World Wide Cycle Supply, the company that owns the Iron Horse brand, along with K2, Columbia Sportswear and Jeep Bikes, has gone bust. K2, Columbia and Jeep have been sold to a new company formed by Worldwide employees called East Coast Cycle Supply.

"The Iron Horse brand will be sold to somebody – the deal is being done at the moment – so although people are saying Iron Horse has 'gone under' that's not the case at all. Iron Horse will continue, it'll just have a different owner. We don't know who it is yet, but we should know next week."
