12 Hours of Kirkwood Coming ?

I hadn't posted anything about this because I didn't want to jinx it, but Team Bigfoot may add a 12 Hour race at Kirkwood (near Lake Tahoe) to their 2009 endurance schedule:
We're working with the mountain bike program director at Kirkwood and with our sponsors to introduce this new-for-2009 event. We'll be able to announce the date and details by late March.
Via 12 Hours of Kirkwood. So late March has come and gone, but I am sure we'll see something soon.

Short Track Returns To US Cup

us-cup-logo.pngThe Short Track pro races have returned to select stops on the US Cup circuit:
Short track, the fast and furious format of cross-country mountain bike racing, is coming back to the top end of American mountain bike racing.

The ShoAir-Specialized US Cup, the new 13-race series of cross-country mountain bike races nationwide, will feature three stand-alone short track events this year. The races will be held at the April 19 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California; the August 16 Yankee Clipper at Windham Mountain, New York; and the September 26 U.S. Cup finals in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The three-race series will be called the Trailwatch.net Triple Crown Short Track presented by Escape Adventures.

The US Cup received the resources to offer the three races from Trailwatch.net and EscapeAdventures.com. The latter is an eco-friendly cycling and multisport tourism outfitter.

So No Mas Moves To Metric 100

event_sonomas.jpgThe folks at BikeMonkey have changed the inaugural So No Mas 100 from miles to kilometers:
For those of you who have registered for the So No Mas race this coming May 16th I’m alerting you to a fairly major change in the format of this event: We are reducing the distance to a strictly 100K race, and completely removing the 100 mile event.

Crank Bros Visit

Great article about one of my favorite MTB parts supplier, Crank Brothers:
A common design theme seems to pervade at Crankbrothers, whether it’s product, packaging or even the company’s product development offices in Southern California.

Crankbrothers comfortably fills a medium sized building three blocks from the water in downtown Laguna Beach. Inside, the workspace has modern European and open feel to it.

Step out the front door and you are presented two choices: Turn right to surf or left and take a short spin to access trails that require serious skill and big bikes to ride. These trails are the stomping ground of the Laguna Rads, a notorious group of mountain bikers, many of whom shaped the original ethics of the sport and continue to uphold them today.

CCCX DH #3 Preview

2009dh25.pngOkay, Monday's post might have been a false alarm ... I was certainly not well yet. But I am now. Promise.

This Easter weekend has only one race on the schedule: CCCX DH #3 near Monterey, CA. Here's the preview of Saturday's race:
For race #3 there will be three people at the registration tables checking riders in on race day. This will make registration quicker for everyone. At the start line there will be 2 people organizing the starting order based on the sign in sheet for start times at registration. Please do not try and start earlier then your selected start time. Riders doing multiple divisions should go to front of the line so they can post multiple runs on the day without running late. The starter will have a list of the riders who signed up for more then one division.

The course for race #3 will be somewhat similar to race #1. It will be super fast at the start with the highest speeds of the course in the first 1 minute of the race. The recent rains combined with hours of trail work have made the race route extremely fast, with all the trails in great shape. The race route will have fire roads, single track, tight and open corners, and off camber sections to challenge each rider. The speeds will be high, yet there will also be some slow turns where riders need to practice break checking and work on tire traction in the corners. The times will be around 3 minutes plus- for this test of skill, ability and fitness.
While it's raining outside now, tomorrow's forecast is nothing but sunshine. Make sure to take advantage of it to get your last bit of training before next week's Sea Otter Classic.

2009 Big Sandy Results

Sorry for the blackout ... been deathly sick AND traveling for the past few days. I'll try and clear the backlog today and tonight if the Nyquil doesn't put me back to sleep.

Last weekend's second annual Big Sandy Race got some love from the mainstream media:
Steve Ray of Fresno outpedaled the field at Saturday's Big Sandy mountain bike race, covering the hilly 23-mile course in 2 hours, 1 minute, 58 seconds.
John Parson of Palmdale placed second in the men's pro/expert division in 2:04.23.
"I knew John would close the gap on every climb, so I had to make the downhills count," said the 34-year-old Ray. "Plus, I've been riding this trail half my life. That kind of helps, too."

Clovis' Kristi Eastin, a Fresno State classics professor who used to be a pro mountain bike and road racer, won the women's pro/expert division in 2:35:55, followed by Amber Finch of Truckee in 2:36.51.
Read the whole story at the Fresnobee.com.

Full results are posted up at USA Cycling but the main site has the photo links .
