Giant NorCal MTB Championship Wrapping Up

WTClassicShortTrack.jpgThe last two races of the Giant Northern California Mountain Bike Championship are coming up, with the penultimate round, the Whiskeytown Classic, at Whiskeytown Lake over the weekend of September 25-27. This season-long series is coordinated by event promotions company Team Bigfoot, headed by Vic Armijo. The series finals will be the famed Lagrange Fall Classic in Weaverville October 16-18 where category championships will be awarded in Cross-Country, Downhill and Super-D. Champions will receive medals, a pair of commemorative socks from Sock Guy and will be eligible to purchase championship jerseys at dealer cost of $60.
  • The Whiskeytown Classic kicks off on the afternoon of Friday Sept. 25 with a Short-Track Cross-Country that’s held on a super-fun 3/10 mile course with a fire-road climb and a flowy single-track descent.
Saturday’s Cross-Country is on a ten-mile, 80% single-track course. Beginners will do one lap, sport riders will do two and experts and pros will do three. “Whiskeytown Lake has become a favorite destination for Northern California mountain bikers,” Armijo says, “This is some of the best mountain bike riding in the state,” he says, “The trails and ditches built during the gold mining era are so much fun to ride!” The Whiskeytown Classic concludes with the Super-D on Sunday afternoon on a course that’s almost entirely single-track, has some great flowing sections, a rock-garden and only a couple of short climbs. An all-mountain bike is the hot set-up.
  • The series wraps up three weeks later at the Lagrange Fall Classic. That weekend starts Friday, October 16 with a Super-D that many have called the best in the state! It’s mostly single-track, has some of the best flow of any course around and it’s lonnng…winning times will be around 28 minutes! Saturday’s Cross Country is on an epic fun course! Again, it’s mostly single-track trails that were dug by hand during the gold rush days of the 1850’s. The beginners get a 14 mile loop, all others get 22 mile of fun! Sunday morning is the Short-Track Cross-Country on a fast course with an oh-so-steep downhill. The series concludes Sunday afternoon with the famed Lagrange Downhill. It’s a long course that starts way up near the top of Weaver Bolly Mountain. Expert times will be almost eight minutes! There’s a bit of everything on this one, steep and loose, fast and smooth, twisty and technical, and a creek jump.

2008 Lagrange Fall Classic Results

I'm a bit late on this, but here are the results from last weekend's Lagrange Fall Classic:Via Team Bigfoot website.

NorCal MTB Racing This Weekend: 10/18 - 10/19

The 2008 race list is rapidly dwindling and this weekend is really the last big endurance race weekend for (maybe) the year. But it's a good weekend:
  • This afternoon, Team Bigfoot's Lagrange Fall Classic begins up north in Weaverville, CA. And I say "begins" because it's a full weekend of racing: Super D, Downhill, Cross Country and Short Track. Check over on the website for the full schedule of events and course descriptions. Team Bigfoot always puts on a great event, so if you haven't made it up yet this season, you really owe it to yourself.
  • Tomorrow is the Lake Sonoma Classic finale. Held out at Lake Sonoma Recreation Area (North of San Francisco near Healdsburg), it's your last chance for XC singletrack racing.
For those looking for a road trip, the Fall Classic is going on down south.

And if you didn't get the message, "The Quick and the Dead" and the "Shanon Ridge Showdown" were both canceled a ways back.

Team Bigfoot Announces 2006 MTB Schedule

Following on the heels of their 2006 Endurance Schedule, Team Bigfoot has posted their 2006 MTB Schedule:
The Pre-Otter (March 26, 2006 in Arcata, CA) : Season kickoff before the Sea Otter Classic: "We're lengthening the course to about 1.5 miles by adding a new singletrack descent. 6 laps for beginners, 8 for sport, 10 for experts." This is a XC race.

Bigfoot Classic (Tentatively Confirmed for June 30-July 2 in Bald Mountain, about 20 miles from Arcata,CA): Hillclimb Friday, Cross Country & Super-D Saturday, Short-Track XC & Downhill Sunday. This one is legendary! Our cross-country course is challenging, fun and has too much singletrack! Last year a visiting SoCal racer said "This is the first mountain bike race of the year...I don't know what those other things were that we've done so far, but this is the first real mountain bike race!" The same can be said for the Super-D,fast, fun and furious. The Short-track is held on a 1-mile all-single-track loop. The downhill is World Cup worthy. Make the drive, you'll be glad that you did. This is hillclimb, XC, SD, ST and DH racing.

Whiskeytown Classic (Tentatively Changed to September 23, 2006 in Whiskeytown Lake, CA): This classic Cross-Country is held on some of the most fun singletrack trails you've ever seen. There's plenty of camping available just minutes from the start/finish line, and for post-race refreshment you've got an entire lake just waiting for you! This is a XC race.

Lagrange Fall Classic (October 20-22 in Weaverville, CA): Super-D Friday, Cross Country Saturday, Downhill Sunday. Held in the Weaver Basin Trail System. Friday's Super-D starts way up Weaver Bolly Mountain and then joins on to the some of the best parts of the XC. The Cross-country is mostly singletrack, experts and sports get to enjoy the challenge of the Lagrange Ditch trail. New trails are being worked on this season and we hope to have a new beginner course that'll also be mostly singletrack. The Downhill starts way up Weaver Bolly mountain and drops over 2500 feet in a 4-mile plunge to the singletrack finish near East Weaver Campground. This is SD, XC and DH races.
I will post more details (like pricing and licenses) when they become available.
