2007 Pine Nut Cracker
The 2007 Pine Nut Cracker has been scheduled for May 6th, 2007 in Gardnerville, NV at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. A part of the Nevada Cup, this XC race has a new course this year. This race venue will be more traditional in the sense of a single-loop instead of having different course loops for different categories. And the start/finish will be at "The Tree" (across the street from last year's race start/finish) so none of the race will be on pavement.

Tour de Granite 2007
Team Spatdog has announced the 2007 Tour De Granite for August 4th, 2007 near Fresno, CA. The course is described as "8 mile circuit course, starts and ends at Markwood Meadows. Fast descents, steep single track, granite climbs, 900ft Elevation gain per lap, creek crossing, steep granite hike."

SEA OTTER: Day 1 (Thursday) Agenda
So it's finally here, day one of the 2007 Sea Otter and opening day for the 2007 MTB racing season. Things get started slowly today, with mostly just practice sessions for Super D and downhill. 2007 Friends of Tamarancho
Velo Club Fairfax is again presenting the 2007 Fairfax Fat Tire Festival, featuring the Friends of Tamarancho Invitational race. This year's festival/race will be held earlier in the season, over the May 12 - 13 weekend. The race (Sunday, May 13th) will feature the same course as previous years will be used, with two trail and two fire road sections, in the only race held at Marin’s single track trails. The race is held at Tamarancho Boy Scout Camp, located in Fairfax, CA.
PCRS #2 Tonight
The second race in the Prairie City Race Series is tonight. With the rain in the area, the organizers have issues the following advice:
I would HIGHLY recommend a rear fender and a front wheel splash guard (on your down tube) for the races tonight! Given the rain, the course will use a lot of the fire roads to avoid the bad mud......and of course today's race will be DOUBLE POINTS!

RACE REPORT: 2007 Boggs II
Results for the 2007 edition of Boggs, Boggs II, have been posted. The organizers posted the following wrapup on their website:

"From start to finish I felt pretty good about the day. We planned for 200 riders, and we got pretty darn close. 30 showed up for same-day registration in addition to the 159 pre-registered for a total of 189 participants. Cumulatively you guys churned out nearly a million of feet of climbing and several thousand miles in distance. If we were passing a baton that amount of effort would have taken it half way around the planet.Here's a quick GPS plot of the course:
A huge thank you to several people. First, I have to thank the volunteers for their extremely hard work. You guys are the reason why people enjoyed themselves on Saturday. You cooked, cheered, handed out water, wrote down times, laid out the course, and after all was said and done we worked together to pick up every single gu wrapper, water bottle, lost bike part, and plastic particle you could find.
Through registrations and donations we raised over $2,500 for the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and the Sonoma County Trails Council. YOU GUYS ROCK."

Dirt Rag Comes To Sea Otter
The people over at Dirt Rag Magazine will be rolling into Monterey:

In its seventeen years, Sea Otter has evolved from a mere weekend race into a spring festival of cycling. ROADTRIP: Mt Buller Kona Bike Park
As many of you know, I spend a lot of time out of the US these days. While this sucks from a racing point of view, it does allow me to occasionally do a bit of "mountainbike vacationing." A few weeks ago, I got a chance to sample Mount Buller Bike Park in Southeastern Australia (near Melbourne). Here's my report:
After arriving pretty late on Friday night, I awoke early to catch some breakfast and get up the hill for some biking. They've paired up with Kona to become one of their 17 groove approved bike park. While the prices were a bit steep (I dropped about AUD$200 for a days rental, which is about USD$150), I decided to hire one of their downhill bikes -- the Kona Stinky. It was this year's Stinky model in pretty good shape.
Mt Buller has a number of downhill runs, but most of them are pretty advanced. I picked the ABOM run, which was rated intermediate, instead of the International run, which at expert had several jumps and 2 meter drops. This was a wise choice, ABOM was extremely rocky, lots of square hits and pretty technical. Unfortunately, half way down I realized that the Aussies reverse their brake levers from Americans (left is back, right is front). Not before going over the handlebars once. But none the worse for wear, I made it down to the village -- about 1.7km.
After I completed my first run, I decided to hook up with a guide that was leading around another group of riders up from Geelong (near Melbourne). This was cool -- they were worse than I was -- and the guide knew a lot of less downhilly type rides around the mountain and village. This was great since I got to see a lot more of the mountain and get away from the developments. Unfortunately, you still needed to use the chair lift to get back up the mountain (the stinky is a really heavy bike). I believe that I may have used up one of my nine lives here -- I fell off once and felt like I was about to the six other times. This shot is over my shoulder as I went up the lift.
I got in about 7 or 8 runs before calling it a day. All in all, well worth the time and effort. For those of you thinking about making the trip, Mt Buller is about 4 hours drive from Melbourne.

Sea Otter Parties
The Sea Otter Classic is more than just a race that opens the MTB season, it is a social gathering. And befitting that gathering, here are some of the parties scheduled for the Sea Otter week:
- Commencal/Marzoochi have invited you to happy hour at Sea Otter next week on April 14, 2007 at 3 p.m. in Booth #513 & 514.
- Team Maxxis Open House will be held on Tuesday April 10th at the Los Laureles Lodge in the Carmel Valley. It's about 20-30 min from Laguna Seca. From 3 pm - 6 team riders Geoff Kabush, Mathieu Toulouse, April Lawyer, Luke Strobel, and Jr DH World Champ Cameron Cole will be available to chat, sign autographs, and answer questions. Team bikes from Litespeed and Ellsworth will be on display. It will be a much more relaxed setting than the race venue, so drop by and say hello.
- The LUNA Pro Team and Orbea invite you to a party. Where? The LUNA Pro Team trailer, 2007 Sea Otter. When? 4:00pm, Friday April 13th. Why? Because we brought beer and food
- Not exactly a party, but more an demo. Magura's Flow Show (jumping) will be held throughout the event.
