On January 7, 2012, promptly at 9:00 AM PST, we’ll be opening the gates on the seventh running of the Boggs 8-hour MTB Relay, our longest-running event. The race itself is on May 5, 2012 at Boggs Mountain State Forest, just far enough off the beaten track to feel like a vacation. Our later 2012 date will hopefully put us all far from the weather concerns that forced us to adjust the course last year.Registration for this race is expected to be Black Friday-esque, but in a Cyber Monday way. In other words, you won’t want to wait to sign up, but you can do so naked, at home, in front of your computer at www.bikemonkey.net/boggs. We won’t/don’t need to know. We’re planning on hosting 700 of you good people and we’ve sold this event out 100% of the time. Do not delay.

We’ll be running a classic MTB XC team relay-style event at a 3500 acre swath of pine forest known as the Boggs State Demonstration Forest, about 2 hours north of SF Bay.Registration Nation! Oh right, the reason you’ve actually opened this email. Registration will open at 9:00 AM PST on January 7th, 2011. That’s this Friday. Not unlike a Harry Potter movie or an iWhatever product release, our fans have already begun camping out at our stoop, despite regular police patrols, pepper spray, and heavy doors that unexpectedly swing out. The rest of you may want to go over to http://boggs.bikemonkey.net to register. It’s a simple process and will cost you $75 bucks, for which you get a meal, a t-shirt, and the chance to look sunken-eyed after a day on the course. This event has sold out every year, despite raising the rider limit time and again, so get quick or get left behind.

The inquisitive minds want to know when Boggs registration will open. The answer? Friday January 7th in the morning hours, let’s say around 9:00. Okay? Good.
However, the Bike Monkey needs some help before the race:
Friends of Lake Boggs has put together a trail maintenance schedule and we’re going to be there lending a hand. Here are the dates. If you have a spare weekend please come!
- Sunday, January 9 at 10 a.m.
- Saturday, Feburary 12 at 10 a.m.
- Sunday, March 13 at 9 a.m.
- Saturday, April 9 at 9 a.m.
Allow 2-3 hours; bring water, gloves and a hand tool. Some tools are also available. The meeting spot is at the Boggs parking lot by the forestry manager’s office.

The good folks over at Bike Monkey [website, magazine, promotions] have announced their 2010 event lineup. I'll skip to the MTB specific stuff:Boggs 5 (FIVE!) - April 3rd, 2010. There are hardly even a dozen spots left when I last checked so if you didn’t get in already, it might be too late. This event has grown by exponential reaches each year and the excitement we’re all sharing about turning 5 is through the roof. We can’t wait to see you there! In a couple short weeks we’ll be designing a brand new route.They also have Levi’s GranFondo and the CXSR series coming back.
Lake Sonoma Series - May 8th, June 12th, July 10th. Only three races this year, and more sun. We’ve tried it all, and from what we can tell Lake Sonoma is best served hot. Mostly it’s because we don’t want to have to take a single sip of beer home after the race is over, but it’s also fine camping weather too.
Annadel? — keep your hopes up! Things are going well, but if plans continue as they have been we may be dialed in for August-somethin’.
SoNoMas - August 28th (tentative). SoNoMas last year SUCKED. I’ll be the first to admit that. It was ridiculously hot, we ran out of water and cut the race short. It was a rough patch, and we don’t have many. So we took some things to heart. First off, one loop around Lake Sonoma is tough enough. So we’re going to be a little more realistic this year and keep it to just that–one lap for everyone; 25 miles of pure suffering and bliss. More details will soon follow about this event, but mark your calendars, and get ready for what will be one of the toughest XC races in the region!

So if you’re a future Boggs V participant and you had your choice, on the table are:Keep in mind that April 3rd is 1 week before the Napa Valley Dirt Classic. We don’t want to impose on such a long-standing event so we stayed away from April 10th out of respect for the race that gave me my first introduction and serious beat-down to mountain bike racing back in the day.
- April 3rd (Easter weekend) — our first choice
- March 27th (NOT Easter weekend) — our second choice

I want to thank all of the racers who came to Boggs again to celebrate what is essentially Bike Monkey’s 4 year anniversary. We had several hundred participants this year, and once again reached our cap. Next year registration will open at midnight on January 1st and close at the same cap. If you didn’t get on our mailing list then you need to e-mail cheryl@bikemonkey.net and make sure you do or you might miss out on being able to sign up for next year’s race. No reason not to go race this weekend, it's beautiful in NorCal this weekend.Saturday: It's sold out, but Boggs IV is going in the North Bay this weekend. 8 Hours, but if you haven't registered you are out of luck. Also Saturday, if you can't get in to the Boggs extravagazea, you might bring out your gravity rig, for the third Sand Hill Spring Gravity. This weekend is Mountain Cross / 4x. Sunday, is the fourth CCCX XC race. Same fast people, similar course at Fort Ordnew course at Toro Park (where the CCCX DH is held).
This weekend is the annual Boggs (the fourth to be exact) and the organizers have some wise words to participants:It snowed last night in Boggs Demonstration State Forest–a couple inches. It’s chilly outside, and it’s snowing even today, periodically. But that’s all about to change. By Saturday the temperature in Cobb, CA are supposed to reach 70 degrees. Boggs IV moved up their date to avoid clashing with the Napa Valley Dirt Classic. The new date is March 28th, 2009. Full details over at BikeMonkey.This year, Bike Monkey will partner with Global Biorhythm Events to produce a new Northern California Ultra Endurance Points series–The Leave No Trace Ultra MTB series. Bike Monkey will produce two endurance events - Boggs 8 Hour on March 28th, and the Sonoma 100 on May 16th. Details on the Sonoma 100 will be coming shortly. It very well may become one of the toughest 100 mile endurance races on record with as much as 15,000′ or more of climbing. and nearly 80+% of the course competed on singletrack.

Boggs III Registration will CLOSE on Wednesday, January 9th. We are just past capacity, and have decided to let the event grow only slightly from its size last year - baby steps. We are very much of the mindset that if it ever looks like there are too many people - THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE. Last year was nearly perfect with room for just a few more entrants. And that's what we have this year - just a few more.
There will be no same-day registration. So make sure to get your entries in by Wednesday!
