More 24 Hr Race Cancellations

On the heels of Andrenalin's cancellation of the 24 Hours of Laguna Seca, Granny Gear has thrown in the towel on two of their National races (including what was supposed to be this year's National Championship):
For the first time in 19 years Granny Gear Productions will not be organizing a 24 hour race in West Virginia, the birthplace of 24 hour mountain bike racing. Granny Gear's Laird Knight has decided not to hold the 2010 edition of the 24 Hours of Big Bear but hopes to hold the event again in 2011.

The 24 Hours of Moab will go on but Knight has also decided to idle the 24 Hours of 9-Mile for this year. "These races still have huge potential and I'm still game for making these events successful" Knight told SPOKES. He said he sees this as an opportunity to "hit the reset button and start now to build a marketing plan now for 2011."

The race, which had previously been known as the 24 hours of Canaan and the 24 Hours of Snowshoe moved to Big Bear in 2005 but hadn't been able to reach the number of teams that it needed to make it sustainable since the move. The decision was "extremely painful", said Knight, but "the finances won't allow" the race to happen this year. In addition to lower than needed participation, the economic slump has made finding sponsors for this year's race very difficult.

I am assuming that USA Cycling will move the National Championship to the 24 Hours of Moab, but nothings official yet.

24 Hours of Adrenalin™ Laguna Seca In Doubt

It looks like this summer's 24 Hours of Laguna Seca is in trouble:
We want to provide an update on what’s been going on behind the scenes for the upcoming 24 Hours of Adrenalin events in California ... Unfortunately, like many companies navigating this current economic climate, we find ourselves in an unfavorable situation. As it stands today, we have been unable to secure the California corporate sponsorship support that is required to put on the kind of races that you all deserve, and it looks unlikely that the two spring races, Hurkey Creek and Laguna Seca, will be held unless this situation changes. Simply put, we can’t afford to do it without additional corporate sponsorship.

We are optimistic that the economic climate will begin to change but feel the obligation, to riders and supporters of the event, to let you know of the possibility that these spring events may not take place this year ... We know this will be disappointing news for people planning to attend and it’s because of this that we are working so hard to try and make them happen. We will make a further announcement in the next few days, sorry for the (possible) sad news.

100% of all entry fees will be returned on Friday February 19th if we can't find sponsorship support for the 2010 season.

This does not effect the September 17th - 19th, 2010 event at Hurkey Creek.

SCAR Cancels 3 MTB Endurance Events

Insurance woes have forced Sierra-Cascade Adventure Sports to cancel their three MTB endurance races this fall:
"Due to unforeseen issues with our insurance company, we unfortunately are required to cancel our MTB races this year. We worked hard to resolve event insurance permit problems, however we were not able to reach a resolution that would allow us to produce a high-quality event."
The cancelled races are:This is unfortunate, I was really hoping to race the New Almaden course.

Eatough, Sawicki defend 24-Hour Mountain Bike Titles

"Nine national champions were crowned at the USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships this morning after the nation’s best ultra-endurance mountain bikers wrapped up 24 grueling hours on the trails of Wisconsin’s Nine Mile County Forest.

Riders set out on Saturday for as many laps as they could complete on the 14-mile course in a 24-hour period. When time ran out this morning, Chris Eatough (Baldwin, Md.) and Pua Sawicki (Mililani, Hawaii) both defended their titles in the men’s and women’s solo divisions.

It was the fifth year in a row for Eatough to take the win in the men’s open division, but he first had to overcome strong opposition from runner-up Josh Tostado (Breckenridge, Colo.) who hoped to dethrone the four-time defending champ. Early on, Eatough and Tostado clearly defined themselves as the strongest riders in the 36-man field and the ensuing battle saw the pair swap the lead several times and complete 20 laps of the 14-mile course before the clock stopped.

Sawicki successfully defended her title from a year ago with 18 laps which she completed in 24 hours and 3 minutes. Taking a huge lead right from the start, she put 13 minutes on her nearest threats in just the first lap and continued to distance herself from the rest of the 11-woman field over the 24 hours."

2008 Shannon Ridge Showdown Cancelled

I don't see any detail on the website, but I am assuming that this is due to the wildfires:
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery has cancelled the Showdown event that was scheduled for October 18, 2008. We appreciate your support and your understanding."

Shannon Ridge Update

Little tidbit of information on the upcoming Shannon Ridge Showdown. Turns out it is being organized by the capable people behind two of NorCal's best endurance races:
"So now we've got another race on our calendar. But it ain't Bike Monkey, and it ain't Global Biorhythm Events--it's both. So if you think a barrel of monkeys is fun, hang on. Because in October you're going to get a 'Global Monkey', and that's a ripe banana."
For those of you not in the know, Bike Monkey is behind the Boggs 8 Hour race and Global Biorhythm puts on the Coolest 24.

You can learn more about the Shannon Ridge race at http://www.ShannonRidge.com.
